Thrilling Caribou Hunting Experience At Munroe Lake Lodge: Jim Winjum's 2023 Adventure

Here at Munroe Lake Lodge, we provide our guests with access to some of the best hunting in all of Canada; our hunters can bag Moose and Central Barren-ground Caribou two must-have trophies for any big game hunter.

As a lodge that offers hunting opportunities you can’t find anywhere else, we get our share of interesting guests. In 2023, we had the honour of hosting hunter and all-around outdoorsman Jim Winjum, the president of Kenetrek Boots.  Here’s the story of his adventure with us:

Setting The Scene: The Manitoba Wilderness

Manitoba is a massive province—and most of it is uninhabited. To reach us, Jim made his way up to the City of Thompson, the largest city in Manitoba’s vast north. From there, we flew him out to our caribou outpost camp at Farnie Lake, in the northernmost reaches of the province.

Farnie Lake is an astonishing sight. Here, you’ll see lichen, shrubs, and sparse stands of tall trees, all along the shores of pristine lakes and rivers. This is untamed wilderness; open skies and fresh air. The Northern Lights can be seen here but no matter how many times a year you see them, they never stop being breathtaking!

This scenic space, far from civilization, is where Jim will bag Barren-ground Caribou—with a bow, no less. We’re getting ahead of ourselves, though; let’s go to the camp.

The Camp Experience

Our camp is where Jim spent his downtime—when there was any downtime to be had. A comfortable outpost camp on the shores of Farnie Lake, our base camp has all of the amenities—internet access, beautiful showers, comfortable beds, and delicious, home-cooked meals, often featuring meat we’ve hunted and fished for right here by the lake.

The Outpost Camp fits up to 14 people—more than enough room for Jim and his friend Brad. Jim had high praise for our lodge, saying:

“Even though you’re in the incredible wilderness, their camp is set up so nicely you almost forget where you’re at.”

Caribou from far away

The Hunt Begins

Jim and Brad were here to hunt; we all got up at the crack of dawn, ate breakfast, and then set out into the wilderness to find Barren-ground Caribou. Our guides had been tracking the herd for days before Jim arrived, so we had a pretty good idea of what their movements looked like.

To quote Jim: “We saw big bulls every single day,”; there were a ton of excellent hunting opportunities. Jim is an avid bowhunter, something he himself calls “sometimes just a ridiculous exercise.” We here at Munroe Lake Lodge are always game for a ridiculous exercise; we love bow hunting, and we were glad to learn that Jim does, too.

Success In The Wilderness

With so many big bulls, and with Jim and Brad being avid hunters, you won’t be surprised to learn they had success in their Barren-ground Caribou hunt. The only thing that might be surprising is just how much success they had.

During their trip to our lodge, Jim and Brad bagged four Caribou bulls; one with a rifle, and three with archery tackle. That’s a lot of big game for a week-long wilderness trip; we’re almost as happy as Jim was about his success!

Highlights Of The Trip

This was an absolutely incredible Caribou hunting trip; there were Caribou right on the lake, and Caribou a relatively short walk away from the camp. Jim said that “the hunt was absolutely fabulous, can’t say enough about it!”—something we were very glad to hear. One of the things we were happiest to hear was when Jim said that “the biggest challenge was what’s the right one.”

That’s right. There were so many big bucks that the hardest part of the hunt was figuring out which bucks to take down. That’s a hunter’s dream, but it’s reality more often than not in our slice of paradise here in Northern Manitoba.

Recommendation & Future Plans

Jim’s final endorsement was this: “I would highly recommend them and I hope to be back at some point.” We hope to have you back sometime soon too, Jim. We loved having you as a guest at our lodge!

Conclusion

On Jim’s adventure, he enjoyed the luxurious amenities of our lodge, the vast wilderness of Northern Manitoba, and most importantly, the thrill of hunting and bagging four Barren-ground Caribou.
